Further to that, Sam, the Green Party plan is to legalize, regulate and tax. Some of the tax revenue would be set aside for a health awareness campaign to discourage use, just like for cigarettes.

Dear Sam,
I don’t know the answer to all your questions.
But I am very clear in my own mind and willing to say on the record (and have for over a decade) that:
- I am in favor of legalizing marijuana
- Regulating and taxing it when sold
- Allowing people to grow their own at home for their own use in reasonable quantities
Having said that, I think we should continue to work to discourage smoking anything, due to the health risks of the carcinogens in the smoke.
Thanks for your email!

Canada should take drastic step, legalize marijuana: Hyer
Aug 27 @ 4:28PM; By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com Photo by:
MP Bruce Hyer wants Canada to reverse its marijuana laws.
The independent MP on Tuesday said it’s time for the country to take a drastic step and legalize cannabis for recreational use, 90 years after legislators added it to the confidential restricted list.
Reached in Ottawa Hyer, who admitted he used the drug decades ago and found it pleasurable, but possibly habit forming, said the country’s marijuana laws are stupid.
“The big reason to legalize it is to take it out of the hands of organized crime,” Hyer said. “We don’t have Satan’s choice selling us beer or wine, so I don’t think it’s smart to have them sell us marijuana.”
The bottom line, he added, is that no amount of enforcement, penalties or jail time can stop users from smoking it up, and making criminals out of them seems a little dated and costly to taxpayers who have to cover jail and prison costs.
“I can’t see any downside. It’s not going away. Prohibition did not work in the ‘30s and it’s not working now.”
Hyer, responding to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s admission he smoked marijuana five or six times in his life, most recently three years ago while a sitting MP, said he doesn’t have an issue with the admission.
“I like his honesty. It’s nice to have an honest politician,” Hyer said.

Dear Bruce Hyer,
Do you support the simple removal of cannabis as a schedule II controlled substance from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (S.C. 1996, c. 19)?, and let it be treated the same as Lettuce, Tomato, Oregano, Roses, Aloe Vera, Fern or any other common garden herb, flower or house plant?
Do you know the difference between Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis?
I look forward to receiving your responses as it will be made public, so then others wont need to ask you the same question.
Kind regards,
Sam Vekemans (address)
P.S. All 306 Members of Parliament are being asked these same questions.
